Gigs In 2000

Complete Gigs: 2000-2002

The following is the complete list of Takers gigs and listed as they originally appeared on The Takers web site.

The "Notes" are as they were listed in the Show History area of The Takers web site. Both Chris Keene and myself wrote these, sometimes alone, sometimes together. It was Chris's idea to list "Money Earned" which we thought was, at the most, amusing and a rather wicked and subversive statement on just what a working band could expect to get paid at that time. Fuck, it was funny, alright?

2000:

-March 3 (?): Jacque's Cabaret, Boston, MA (date unconfirmed)
With: ???
Money Earned: 0
Notes: Billed as a Daviess County Panthers show. Tim Morse was in attendance.

Set included: Pretty Thoughts/Dirt

-April 21: O'Brien's, Allston, MA
With: Black Helicopter, Liquor Tricks
Money Earned: 0
Notes: Nick said bye-bye to his wisdom teeth that day and was henceforth unable to attend. He says the Tooth Fairy left him a special present under his pillow, but is not at liberty to divulge what it was. This was John's last show as a Taker. Chris can't remember anything about the show past the point where they played.

-September 9: O'Brien's, Allston, MA
With: La Machine, The Uniform, The Fuses
Money Earned: 50
Notes: Fun for all the right reasons. Nick's debut as a Taker.

Set included: Crash Safely/Spy On My Radar

-September 29: Middle East Upstairs, Cambridge, MA@
With: Heidi, Heavy Stud, The Decals
Money Earned: 100
Notes: Review in The Noise by Kenne Highland

-October 15: Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, MA
With: Pere Ubu
Money Earned: 75
Notes: Review in The Boston Globe by Jim Sullivan. Dave Thomas had a ruluctance bordering on paranoia about the prospect of sharing his brandy. Nick officially contracts tinnitus, which is tantamount to a Takers secret handshake or blood oath.

Set included: The Only Reason/Midnight/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down

-October 25: "James Dean Death Car Show", WMBR-FM, Cambridge, MA*
Gene Fierro, Guest Host
Money Earned: 0
Notes: Played 2 sets. Covered The Stones' "She's So Cold".

Set 1 (Unconfirmed): "White Fuel Intro"/Twin Peaks/Rubber Bullets/The Only Reason/She's So Cold/Stars/Crash Safely

Set 2 (Unconfirmed): The Visit/Pretty Thoughts/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down/Endless Bummer (aka The Who Song)/Infinity

Gigs In 2001

2001:

-January 16: "Pipeline", WMBR-FM, Cambridge, MA*
Bob Dubrow, Host
Money Earned: 0
Notes: Covered "Knocking on Heaven's Door". The band remains unashamed by this, a testament to the Takers' power of self-denial.

Set: Knockin' On Heaven's Door/Second Time/Funk 69/The Visit/The Only Reason/My Solution/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down/Rubber Bullets/Infinity ->/Crash Safely

-January 19: O'Brien's, Allston, MA*
With: Six Finger Satellite, Foreign Auto Body, Guerrero
Money Earned: 90
Notes: This was the first time 6FS had played in Boston in over two years. They haven't returned since.

-February 7: Emily's, Boston, MA (cancelled)
With: The In Out
Money Earned: 0
Notes: Show Cancelled

(P.M.N.: This was really too bad because Emily's was a pretty funky "venue" [really a former dining room I think] in Downtown Crossing. The show only got cancelled because the booking agent, better known to some as Supachik, was fired and got her shows 86'd. I think Emily's is now some sort of Eurotrash dance club that does not have live music. So goes history...)

-February 22: TT The Bear's Place, Cambridge, MA
With: Arab on Radar, Olneyville Sound System
Money Earned: 50
Notes: Arab on Radar paid $350.

Set: Black And White/The Only Reason/Twin Peaks/Acting Beautiful/Funk 69/The Visit/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down/Rubber Bullets/2nd Time

-March 7: O'Brien's, Allston, MA
With: The Burnouts, White Trash Deluxe, The Franklins
Money Earned: 70
Notes: White Trash Deluxe reviewed in The Noise by Sleazegrinder (whatever). No mention of us. We were also snubbed by the Burnouts after loaning them our equipment. Nick announced us as Scritti Politti. This was the last bad show we will ever play.

(P.M.N.: My mother was Miss Denmark 1962-well, she was, at least, at a Chicago World's Fair event-and I felt certainly that warranted better treatment from this Union Carbide Productions ripoff. This show was also the source of a broken snare drum for Chris [thrown against the wall after our set] and my "we'll be in Schenectady tomorrow night with Scritti Politti" announcement as, yes, a direct mockery of The Burnouts' lame "we'll be at CBGB tomorrow night". I think Scritti Politti kept coming up because I had just received a bootleg tape of them from Jim Manniello [see the SXSW show].)

Set Included: Funk 69/The Only Reason/Rubber Bullets

-April 24: Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, MA
With: The Melvins, The Folk Implosion
Money Earned: 150
Notes: The Melvins are all great guys, and just keep getting more and more amazing. During "White Fuel", a "You...SUCK" was distinctly heard. As great as this was, the "Opening band, you rock!" comment at the end of our set was even better.

Set included: White Fuel (opener)/Twin Peaks

-May 13: Middle East Upstairs, Cambridge, MA
With: Cul De Sac, Black Helicopter, Box Patrol
Money Earned: 0
Notes: We refused money on this sadly underattended show. Be sure to catch any and all of these other bands before you die.

(P.M.N.: I remember almost nothing from this night. I'm pretty sure I was there. Box Patrol were their usual incredible selves-they were most certainly the Coil of Boston.)

-August 10: Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, MA
With: The Murder City Devils, Cracktorch
Money Earned: 100
Notes: We played a nearly flawless set. This was later reviewed by the Noise. They said our guitar player looked scared, our singer was a little guy and referred to our bass player as "Baby Huey"...so we sent K a gracious thank you note (really).

-August 12: Knitting Factory, New York, NY
With: The Alchemysts, Aytobach Kreisor, Medicine Ball
Money Earned: 40
Notes: This was the first time both Kenny and Dave from Rubric got to see us play. Kenny handed us the forty bucks presumably out of pocket and hopefully as a token of more financial support to come. The Alchemists should have drawn better, and covered Suicide's "Ghost Rider" and Thee Hydrogen Terror's "Plate In My Head". Medicine Ball left after their set.

Set included: Infinity (Between 8 And 9)/White Fuel

-August 31: Abbey Lounge, Cambridge, MA
With: Mr. Airplane Man, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Money Earned: 120
Notes: A great show with great people. The other two acts on the bill were reviewed in The Noise by a nameless blindman who was not Slezegrinder (again whatever). Chris managed to make it onstage before the first chorus of "Here Comes a Regular"

Set included: Here Comes A Regular (opener)

-September 14: Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, NH (cancelled)
Money Earned: 0
Notes: Show postponed due to the preceding week's events. We still look forward to playing a prep school, if only as an opportunity to test how well we can curb our on and offstage behavior.

-September 20: Middle East Upstairs, Cambridge, MA
With: Easy Action, Liquor Tricks
Money Earned: 75
Notes: Ever look back on the wake of emotional destruction caused by your actions, wonder "what would I do differently", and conclude that you'd just end up doing exactly the same thing? Yes, I know that's what all our songs are about, but it makes me long to be playing somewhere where we don't know anyone; to just leave all that baggage behind so it's just us and the music.

-October 18: TT the Bear's Place, Cambridge, MA
With: And You Will Know Us by the Trail of the Dead, Black Helicopter
Money Earned: 50
Notes: Why do people say they want to break stuff when we play? I don't honestly understand our connection to violence. I can only hope it's because they really want to fuck, but just feel too repressed. Maybe people just aren't drunk enough by the time we play. Ah, I'll leave this matter for the critics, of whom there were at least two professionals in attendance (and God knows how many amateurs).

TT's was pretty packed when we played, and filled up even more as the night passed. The door was ten bucks. We went home with fifty; Black Helicopter got $100. I can only speculate where the remaining money went, but I highly doubt Trail of the Dead is a thousand-dollar band.

-November 1: Abbey Lounge, Somerville, MA
With: Mr. Airplane Man, The Operators
Money Earned: 52
Notes: Another great show with Mr. Airplane Man and The Operators.

(P.M.N.: About the only thing I remember about this night was that the Operators had complete assholes for boyfriends.)

Oxbow/Takers Tour (November 6-11):

-November 6: Fireside Bowl, Chicago, IL
With: Oxbow, N/O
Money Earned: 30
Notes: Moved to the Fireside Bowl ...from the Empty Bottle. Thanks to Rob, Emma and Reed for coming out to see us; presumably most rest of Chicago was at the Black Rebel Mortorcycle Club/ Sheila Divine show across town. This was our first night seeing the mighty Oxbow. Quote Nick, "I could see myself getting nuked from onstage."

-November 7: Mac's, Lansing, MI
With: Oxbow, Adam's Castle
Money Earned: 80
Notes: Strange crowd. They watched us and clapped in all the right places but there was no response when we tried to up the intensity in hopes of winning them over.

-November 8: Nyabinghi, Youngstown, OH
With: Oxbow
Money Earned: 75
Notes: Nyabinghi means "Kill Whitey" in Swahili, or so says Greg Barrett, the club owner. Greg also makes THE finest Bloody Mary I've ever tasted.

-November 9: Brownies, NYC
With: Oxbow, Arab On Radar, Flux Information Sciences, Jumbo's Killcrane
Money Earned: 75
Notes: We played at 8:00 to some of our friends. Apparently we still needed to eat some more shit in NY before our dues are paid.

-November 10: (The North Six?), Brooklyn, NY (cancelled)
With: Oxbow, Enon
Money Earned: 0
Notes: We can't play cause the the show got double-booked. Aargh.

-November 11: Middle East Upstairs, Cambridge, MA
With: Oxbow, twocubedsixsquared.
Money Earned: 0

Notes: We play a great show to a half-full club of friends and fans. Not too bad for a Sunday, I thought.

twocubedsixsquard play intensely, intimately and dynamically and seem very comfortable onstage for a band who have only played live a handful of times.

Oxbow are rested, rehearsed and ready for blood. They play their finest set yet, and Eugene does this crazy thing where he parts a pair of floor wedges, Jim Siegal says, "like the Red Sea". "They were in my way," Eugene later explains. I suppose it's easy to be modest about these matters when your biceps are as big as the waist-size of an average Strokes member. I make a mental mote not to get in Eugene's way.

Due to a misunderstanding between Tone Deaf Touring and the Middle East, the contract was not signed and Oxbow only receive $150 of the $200 verbally agreed upon. The Takers and twocubedsixsquared forgo payment. I make a mental note to always get it in writing.

-December 28: The Abbey Lounge, Somerville, MA*
With: Speedball Baby (cancelled), Turpentine Brothers, Guerrero
Money Earned: 0
Notes: Due to "illness", Speedball Baby couldn't make this or the following night's show, so we took the headlining slot and added Guerrero to the bill.

The two-piece Turpentine Brothers (Tara from Mr. Airplane Man and Justin) played a great blues set, with Tara playing Farfisa AND drums on one particular song.

Guerrero were typically loud, and as with many of their better sets, were occasionally able to create a transcendant, hypnotic effect. This was unfortunately marred by technical difficulties by Steve, whose cords kept shorting out.

We played last, to about twenty people (including our #1 Belgian fan, Wouter De Sutter). It was a difficult set; though we played well and intensely, we ended feeling as though we didn't really win people over.

We would have made $33 on this show, but were (apologetically) charged for a broken microphone stand.

Set: Midnight/Tight Rope Walker/2nd Time/I Can't Feel/The Only Reason/Twin Peaks/My Solution-Hot Stuff/The Visit/White Fuel

-December 29: The Abbey Lounge, Somerville, MA*
With: Speedball Baby (cancelled), The Konks, Triple Thick
Money Earned: 50
Notes: According to Nick, Triple Thick have beefed up their lineup to good effect. I've only ever seen them in their present three-guitar lineup and was more impressed with their performance this night than when I had seen them a month prior. Their songs are campy, but not quite to the point of being silly and they were able to create the good mood which lasted the rest of the night.

As was the case the night before, the middle band was plagued with guitar troubles, with a tube falling out of the back of Bob's amp. The Konks might disagree with me on this, but I didn't think the gear problems affected their set in the least. The Konks play revved up vintage trash rock, with Kurt singing and playing a two-piece kit (tom and snare) right up front. The songs, playing and singing were great, and we knew they were going to be a tough act to follow.

To keep the energy moving, we set up quickly so as not to allow people to "escape" after the Konks. There was some dissent as to our set list, as I didn't want to start with "Dictator", a throw-away song we hadn't practiced in months. I lost the vote and we played it anyway, which, in hindsight, actually turned out ok. The remainder of our set was terrific, and we ended with a slow number we call "Twin Peaks". When we convened backstage, we realized people weren't going anywhere, so we came back and faked our way through the Stooges' "Loose" and "TV Eye".

We got paid $50, sold some merchandise and made a few new fans.

Set: Dictator/Infinity/Crash Safely/The Screws/Acting Beautiful/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down/Rubber Bullets/Twin Peaks/Encore: Loose/TV Eye

Gigs In 2002

2002:

-January 11: Beckett's Pub, Packard's Corner, Boston, MA
With: The Medea Connection
Money Earned: 40
Notes: We played a relaxed set that debuted one new song ("Ghost Highway") as well as a revamped/rethought oldie ("Black And White"). Beckett's is cool: an ornate setting, dollar drafts for the band, nice bartenders (one of whom compared us to, ahem, The Sheila Divine [???]), and booker Dave asked us to return. Several friends who'd never seen us before actually made this show, including the mysterious rock critic Jordan Catalano, long thought to be in hiding.

The Medea Connection have unflinchingly decided to go really over the top with a smoke machine, strobe lights, back lights, and a gong. This is the first time I'd seen them with their bass player, Steve, who adds a lot to the sound. They seem to just get better and better. Face it: there is no other band like them in town, and how in the hell can you follow an act like that?

Show was later reviewed by Jordon Catalano in The Noise.

Set included: Ghost Highway (only live performance)/Black And White

-January 19: Paradise, Boston, MA@
With: Mission of Burma, Cracktorch

Money Earned: 100

Notes: Mission of Burma reunion show! Another international fan (Izumi Araki from Japan)! We covered DMZ's "Don't Jump Me Mother" and we faked our way through Lou Reed's "I Wanna Be Black", ultimately that wasn't the point of doing this song...those who were there know what I mean. Hey, we sold 2 CDs!

Set: Twin Peaks/Tight Rope Walker/Crash Safely/2nd Time/The Only Reason/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down/Infinity/Don't Jump Me Mother/I Wanna Be Black

-January 24: Middle East Upstairs, Cambridge, MA
With: Easy Action, Detachment Kit
Money Earned: 100
Notes: As with last year, same show with the same bands, but this time the regret is automatic, and not desperate. Is it just mechanical? Well, maybe. Do we deserve to get away with it? I suppose. But it doesn't feel good. Never does.

Also, earlier in the evening Nick Blakey was spoonfed white chocolate mousse by Chris Jackson. Interpret this as you will.

Set included: L.A. Woman (opener)

-February 8: CBGB's New York, NY (cancelled)
With: ???
Money Earned: 0
Notes: The Takers ended up not be playing this show and instead swapped it for the spot appearing at the Knitting Factory with the Heroine Sheiks instead. See below 3/9/02. We believe this show ended up being a Spare Snare reunion, with Black Boyfriend and Rattle For The Baby appearing with The Mighty Joe Silve Experience (w/The Fenway Singers) in our place.

-February 25: Charlie's Kitchen, Harvard Sq, Cambridge, MA
With: Mr. Airplane Man, The Modifiers
, Todd Giles (aka "some guy with a guitar")
Money Earned: 100
Notes: Small and crowded and smoky; always a good recipe for a Takers show. Stageless, Mike C. performed most of the set standing on a chair. Points were also earned for poking out ceiling tiles mid-set. TT's would have deducted that little stunt from our pay, but the lovely bartenders at Charlie's, enablers that they are, only smiled and said, "that's ok, they needed replacing anyway."

Our inability to cover a Mr. Airplane Man song (that they themselves has performed only 1/2 hr prior) was not only forgiven, but strangely added to the loose, fun-lovin' atmosphere.

"The Takers? fun lovin'? What the hell are you talking about. Chris?"

Well, no, we're not fun people, actually. But it's our duty to entertain, and we're certainly not out to make some sort of STATEMENT. So we settle for spectacle, and hope for a riot whenever possible.

The son of an insurance salesmen (owner, actually), Mike C. knows a thing or two about endurance. Which is why he finally relented to the pleas of the band and agreed to utter the classic line, "we have shirts and cd's for sale..." None were sold, but we were refreshingly well paid for such a small venue.

Show later was reviewed by Laura Markley in The Noise.

Set included: Twin Peaks/Don't Jump Me Mother/Pink Panther/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down/Not Living At All (Aborted)/Caravan (as "Taliban")

-March 9: Knitting Factory, New York, NY
With: Heroine Sheiks
Money Earned: 150
Notes: Running hot and playing hot, we burned through our 40 minute set as well as we've ever done. No doubt spurred on by Mike C's sales pitch, the too-cool-for-you New York Looking People seemed to approve and put their money where their mouths were, picking up several copies of our EP from the merchandise table. This marks our first "good" NY show.

Herione Sheiks were magical, although for some strange reason, people refused to dance. Maybe everyone was just too intimidated by the girl yelling out "you suck" after every song.

Dave and Kenny from Rubric seemed pretty enthusiastic about the whole event. Nick's bass hero Tim Wright, the man who wrote "Heart of Darkness" and played on "Final Solution", even showed up to give his blessing, stating: "You know I hate everything, but I thoroughly enjoyed you guys." Awesome.

Set: Twin Peaks/Tight Rope Walker/2nd Time/The Only Reason/Pink Panther/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down/Rubber Bullets/Between 8 & 9 (Infinity)

-March 16: O'Brien's, Allston, MA (cancelled)
With: Flux Information Sciences, Clue Display
Money Earned: 0
Notes: The Takers were originally scheduled to play this show before we decided to do SXSW 2002 instead (The 914, possibly against their better judgement in hindsight, graciously agreed to take our place). You should have attended this show if for some reason you couldn't have made it to Austin to see us...

-March 16: The Empanada Parlour Upstairs, Austin, TX (SXSW)@
With: thebrotheregg, Mary Lou Lord, Raging Teens, Analogue II, Aytobach Kreisor
Money Earned: 175
Notes: The Rubric Records Showcase at SxSW!!! We pulled a timeless rock maneouver and finished our set with the most brutal disembowelment of "Between 8 And 9 (Infinity)" we have ever attempted, ending with a kicked over drum kit, an MIA drummer, and yet another slaughtered mic stand. James Manniello summed it up best with both "FUCK!!!" and "I haven't seen anything like that in 13 years..." NUFF SAID!!! I will say I wish we had caught the SXSW sets by both Easy Action and (in retrospect and hindsight) The Icarus Line, but we did, at least, managed to catch Oxbow at Emo's displaying their usual bouts of "hot cock fun!"

Set included: Between 8 & 9 (Infinity) (closer)

-March 23: under Disc Diggers, Davis Square, Somerville, MA
With: Asciento + many other bands
Money Earned: 0
Notes: Broadcast live via www.radioboston.com. Despite both Willie Loco Alexander and Mistle Thursh backing out, this turned out to be a really good show, especially after we insisted on using our own equipment (including that fucking behemouth of a bass amp). We did a four song set ["Don't Jump Me Mother", "Pink Panther", "Last Kiss", and "Between 8 And 9 (Infinity)"], debuting both "Last Kiss" (incorporating a bit of the Stones' "Fingerprint File") and Nick's new silver sparkle Jazz bass. Nick and Chris narrowly avoided fistfights with a varying degree of persons (solely related to the moving to and fro of the equipment-hence, this is probably why the hosts did not want us using it in the first place...), and we left immediately following our performance (owing mostly to sickness, fatigue, and overinjestion). Oh yeah and T.Max actually discovered that we do indeed exist...wow!?!?!

Set: Don't Jump Me Mother/Pink Panther/Last Kiss/Between 8 And 9 (Infinity)

-March 30: Abbey Lounge, Somerville, MA
With: Black Helicopter, Grubstake, Aytobach Kreisor
Money Earned: 100
Notes: Never a bad time at the Abbey, and it's always good to play with friends who don't say "good show" or "nice set" (NB: this is an acceptable term coming from an audience or club staff member, but not from another band on the bill. So the best response to that is "Did you just say 'fuck you'?) But where again was the truly lovely, talented, and very beautiful fair maiden of the Red Chord Andrea Gillis? Ah well, but I will say if I hear "Not too shabby at the Abbey" ever again I will immediately stop the set to demand of the rest of The Takers to switch gears and finish the night with a set of strictly GG Allin, Mentors and Angry Hate covers. AMEN!

-April 10: Bennington College, Bennington, VT
With: Detachment Kit
Money Earned: 197
Notes: Our first college gig, and our second with the Detatchment Kit. Huh, last time we played with them, they were opening for us. This time it was the other way around, and they of course did not remember us (at first). Must have been the lack of Hartke cabinets on our part, but I will give DK kudos on their Gibson Flying V and HIWATT amp.

This was an interesting gig. I especially like it when folks dance during our set, and I am always amazed that the dancers can find cool ways to shake their hips to the likes of "Looking Down" (maybe all of this dancing means we're closer to The Gossip then previously thought). Best quotes:

UNK1: "Did you just say 'fuck you'?"

SS: "You guys remind me of THE NEW YORK DOLLS..." NSB: "Would you like a drink?"

UNK2: "Who is that FAG in your band who thinks he's in AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB???"

We didn't even get to cover "Bad Liquor". Figures...

Set Included: One Last Chance ->/Looking Down

-April 12: The Midway Cafe, Jamaica Plain, MA
With: PornBelt, The Grand Island (REUNION!), Mutant Message
Money Earned: 50
Notes: Almost felt like what might have happened had we actually accepted that offer of a Safari Lounge gig from Johnny P. It was great that Joe Coughlin finally saw us (and even reviewed us in The Noise) voluntarily on his own time, but despite our medium-to-high swish factor and plethora of free Carl Cox masks, I don't think we were exactly "right" for the J.P. crowds. However, the incident with the chain during "Last Kiss" was kinda fun, but you'll have to ask Mike C. about that in person.

Set Included: Don't Jump Me Mother (opener)/Last Kiss/Rubber Bullets

-May 30: The Middle East Upstairs, Cambridge, MA
With: Gogol Bordello, Grubstake
Money Earned: 160
Notes: The If The Blues Were Red record release party! My God...six people shy of a sell out! Holy shit! The best way to describe this undescribable night is again strictly through the use of quotes. Here we go:

UNK: "Whatever I'm losing in money I am gaining in moral impropriety."

Sue Safton describing GOGOL BORDELLO: "It's like being at a Jewish wedding where the champagne has been spiked with acid."

Brett Milano describing GOGOL BORDELLO: "I thought this punk rock shit would NEVER catch on!"

CK: "He was bare-chested on our couch an hour ago."

NSB: "So does he have a hairy chest?"

CK: "No actually a rather smooth chest."

NSB: "So is that an anti-garage door chest then?"

CK: "No I think it's more of a driving around the block and can't find parking chest..."

GB violinist: "Next time we play DOWNSTAIRS!!!"

And indeed they shall. If you weren't there, then you just wouldn't understand. We covered "Slave" by The Rolling Stones and did our first attempt at merging "Between 8 And 9" with The Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner". Don't ask me why or how.

Set: Black And White/Crash Safely/Slave ->/Last Kiss/All Terrain Man (Fast Version)/Pink Panther/One Last Chance ->/Looking Down/Rubber Bullets/Infinity ->/Road Runner/The Visit (encore)

-June 1: The Flywheel, Easthampton, MA
With: The Come Down, The Seperation Papers, The Jaded Set

Money Earned: 0

Notes:

Set included: All Terrain Man (Slow Version)

(Post Mortem Notes: I don't remember much about our set save for Mike H. came in very late, barely anyone was there, Mike C. did this very odd but appropriate kick-dance with the mic stand during our only ever live performance of the slow version of "All Terrain Man", which sounded kinda like a badly dosed Move doing "Brontosaurus" on vari-speed. The Jaded Set, however, were fucking mindblowing. I remember they were a two piece with drum machine, lots of smoke and echo, Dean guitars, and a sound that made them seem as if they should have been on a bill in Leeds circa 1983 smack dab between The Sisters Of Mercy and The Three Johns. When I asked the guitarist if she was a big fan of those bands, she paused for amoment, told me she'd never heard of them, and then replied "I'm really into Kiss, actually." Fucking brilliant. They're now known as Kisskill Destroyer...)

-June 9: The Abbey Lounge, Somerville, MA
With: The Chargers Street Gang, Sugabomb!
Notes:

Set included: White Fuel (closer)

(Post Mortem Notes: the 6/9 show at the Abbey was the Takers' last ever gig. Sugabomb! did not bother to show up for the event. There were no more than 15 people in the audience, 5 of whom were The Chargers Street Gang.)
